I have an '88 4+3 convertible. Replaced transmisssion, side cover, shift forks, and adjusted shifter per GM tech manual, and it still jumps out of 2nd gear periodically. Any ideas? HELP!!

sounds like a worn second gear and syncro may also need a shift slider quite a large job maybe to many hard 1-2 shifts only my 2 cents steve :w

Welcome To The Corvette Action Center reenid!

Two adjustments immediately come to mind: the shifter linkage itself is not fully engaging second gear, or the transmission could be mis-aligned with the bellhousing, placing undue stress on the input shaft, causing it to pop out of gear upon acceleration or deceleration.

There will be more response; hang in there. Glad to have you with us. :upthumbs

Just wondering ,when you said "replaced transmission",did you mean with a rebuilt one or just a used one?And ,did you mean the trans,or the od unit. Some peoplep say and mean different things.I am nowhere near a trans expert but this definitley has nothing to do with the od unit.:beer

Does it jump out at any particular time, like when you're decelerating from high revs in 2nd? Or does it just pop out whenever?

have replaced with rebuilt tranny. itd jumps out of gear under deceleration only . i have replaced side cover and shifter forks and have also checked detent balls for proper gaps

what was replaced in the trans when it was rebuilt. not every thing gets replaced. if the second gear is worn borderline and if the slipring syncro was a used one it can slip off under acceleration or decel depending on the wear . in a rebuilt trans it is a judgement call on what is replaced usually it is just blocking rings and bearings and if inferior parts were used this can also happen because the tolerances are to loose what was wrong with the original trans.the second gear is uaually the one to give problems it seems to take the worst abuse and as the gear wears it has less holding power if you look at the part of the gear that is used for locking second gear you would be amazed they are only about 3/16 to a 1/4 inch long so if they are worn this is the result the teeth are just in back of the brass blocking ring and should be very defind and not rounded over compare them to the other teeth on the other gears .they are so small it i can't believe we don't have more problems :w :beer just my 2 cents Steve
