Has anyone had the oportunity to break the connector off the temp switch on the overdrive unit? I did it trying to straighten it up. I was wondering since the switch has clips inside the overdrive to remove it ( I just put the pan back up and it actually has no leaks), is the switch acting as a ground once the overdrive warms up? If that's the case I'd rather ground the wire and wait for it to warm up before hitting the button instead of taking the pan down again.
Thanks!

I am not aware of any temperature switch on the overdrive unit. There are a few electrical connections, one being a pressure switch, which protects the unit. Another connection is for the solenoid itself; one internal, one external, in series with the pressure switch.

Am I missing something, here? :w

Hi Whalepirot'
Are you missing something? I know I am!
When I had the pan off I looked at the back side of the switch...before I broke it off of coarse, It looks like a temp switch only because it has nothing on the inside end. I have not had much chance to drive the car. I drove it with the old owners plates for a day and I've been working on it ever since November 04 when I got it. The overdrive didn't work till it warmed up a bit. I figured that switch was the reason. It is a singe tang switch and has a green wire going to it. I can't seem to find it on the wiring schematic for the car either. I'm sure someone out there knows.

I believe that you are looking at the exterior connection for the solenoid, which is inside the unit, behind the pan. You may have knocked the tang off the pressure switch, which then feeds the solenoid. I believe I recall it being a green wire. The unit will not operate without the pressure switch blocking that 12vdc. I suspect that the boys in New York http://www.skspeed.com/ have the part at the best price. Call the tranny shop number.

Sorry, Jon, but while the pics posted are what I recently studied at length, in my manual, and I am quite familiar with them, they are unreadable on this laptop display. I am leaving Anchorage is a few hours for New York, and won't get to my manuals for about 5 days.

It is designed to not operate until the car enters closed loop operation i.e. warmed up. The ECM will not send a grounding signal to the relay until.

From memory: 12vdc goes to a terminal on the relay and the dash light from the console switch; then to the first gear switch and the O/D case connection (the fluid pressure switch); finally to the solenoid inside. The relay needs both 12vdc and a ground to close and send power to the solenoid.

The ECM controls the ground; the first gear, and other switches control the 12vdc. Either can depower the relay (and the solenoid).

The boys in NY are nice and helpful; also quite busy. This sounds like something you should be able to tackle successfully.

It's in the high 60s today and another glorious day of full sunshine. Too bad: the last week of 70's was even nicer when riding the Beemer around, gazing at the snow capped mountains and inhaling the freshest air I ever smelled. No, I won't trade.

The Vettes are out along with all the other, numerous exotic cars. I even saw a silver C-6 along with every other generation.

it is the 12 volt supply for the solenoide, the part is serviced by GM and is used on a number of ATs, i bought one last year but don't have the part number. frank

Everyone...thanks for the help on this one! Whalepirot...you hit it right on!!!! The pan is off! And it had no leaks either!:cry
