...been looking around for options that might offer some improvement w/ early C3 (70-74 range) factory Delco stereos (U79). All the good modern aftermarket stuff w/ newer cone materials, butyl surrounds and 2 way or better speakers are all 4 ohm. I believe 4 ohms to be just too low for the older amps. (10 ohms is correct, 8 ohms will probably do)
A) I've found some 'Delco' service replacement 4X6s listed in some of the popular Corvette mail order outfits but I can't find diddly for information on these purportedly 'original' replacements? Anybody tried these or have personal experience? Are they in fact 10 ohms? Do these newer Delco replacements have larger magnets than the original 'square' magnets in the 4X6s used in the early 70s? (I'm fairly certain these are still basic paper cone 1-way jobs but can be had for less than a re-cone job might cast)
B) It doesn't seem like it was that long ago that 8 ohm car speakers could be had in the aftermarket. But I haven't found in - are these long gone or does anybody know of any that might still be available?
C) Also has anybody had any luck improving acoustics in front dash speakers (originals or modern hi-fi aftermarket or whatever) w/ say any sort of enclosure or baffling or insulation in their dashes around the speakers? Normally they are mounted to metal bracks, face up and are open/exposed underneath inside the dash.
thanks,
