I got a quote from a corvette shop to repaint my car for the $4500. This includes a full strip and alignment of all panels and body work to the rear quarter. I want to go black so he told me this could entail more money/work but it could be done if it was what I wanted. This was my first quote. I was pretty impressed the guy spent about 1 1/2 hours talking to me about my car. Pretty darn good sell if you ask me. There were only corvettes in his shop. A fine 69 BB, that was very slick. Several C3 vettes. If you have the Volunteer Vette catalog you can see some of his work on the cover in the black 63. I am leaning on going here without even getting another quote. What do you guys think?

Around here (northeast) that price would get you a mediocre job. If you like his work from what you see and the person is nice I would say go with him. Just check with the BBB and the state licensing division. Ask to “SEE” his liability insurance and talk with a couple of his clients. Don’t expect to get the car back in a week or two…expect months for a good job. Remember the guy is trying to make a living and has to get production out in order to pay the bills so don’t rush him. But don’t let him slide too far or your car will sit in the corner forever. Protect your own butt, he is not your friend. He is a business, and you are a client, treat it as such.

Good advice Jon. I will keep this in mind.

By all means, contact a local Corvette club and ask them for their recommendations!!! The best reference is from a Corvette owner who has been happy with the finished work. We had our '74 roadster stripped, slight repairs made on body, repainted the same Corvette Orange, new weatherstripping, new front and rear bumpers, and all new emblems, door handles, etc. (we bought those separately), and the price was $5,000. We felt it was well worth the money. Six members of our club had used this shop...the work is incredible!! Absolutely no orange peeling, drips...perfect paint job!!

Of course, a color change will cost more as there's more work to do.

As much as you like this guy, keep asking around!!! Can't stress that enough!! The more you talk with people, the more you learn about the whole process!!

Good luck...and let us know how you make out.

Elaine

Hey if it means anything to you I do autobody for a living and I have done corvettes for like 3500 a pop and they turn out really nice...My corvette I am doing myself and I am going with house of kolor for 800.00 and that is all...my meaning is Shop around I know that there are plenty of shops that will spray for cheap but check there work first...sounds like the guy is pretty reputiable but I know that it could be cheaper like I say I do them at 3500 and them is with the 50.00 and hour factored in.

That price is a good price to start with.Thats about what I charge for just the body and paint work.Is he going to disassemble everything .Check for details ,like is he going to paint the bottom of the hood,or is he going to paint the doors off the car or on.If he is going to do them off would he replace door hinge pins and bushings? Also is he going to paint the back side of the convertible decklid? If so is he going to remove all hardware or paint it body color? Is he going to replace all weatherstripping ,chrome and light lenses. These are some of the things I ask when doing a complete overall. For me personally I wont do the car unless the owner agrees to replace these items .But I will admit when these items are added and and the labor involved in installation and so on,it will reach about 7k for an overall.
