I am wondering if it might be better to change oil weights for my LT4 since it has 60k on it from 5w-30 to 10w-30 of course sticking to Mobil-1.What do you think. Thanks Kevin.

I think a lot of us use the 10W-30. I'm not 100% positive but I think one of the reasons why 5W-30 was used from the factory was for mileage purposes. I use 10W-30 in all my vehicles and have no problems.

You probably already know this being in Arkansas but you can get the 5 quart synthetics at Wal Mart for $20.00 :D

I use 10w30 but I'm in San Diego. Never start the car under about 45 deg f. - coldest it might ever get.

I think I get extra protection on the 90 degree days - get a few of them :) - with 10w-30.

i have used 10-30 synth. on two occasions and had some lifter noise on both oil changes. prior to that it was 15-50 synth and never had any lifter noise, the noise occured at idle only. also i noticed that running the 15-50 resulted in lower operating temps at idle and lower speeds. temp runs 200 to 204 below 85 mph, above that it rapidly drops down to 197-194 temp. i personally like 15-50w .

I would not go any thinner then 10w30. I put 5w30 Castrol in my Escort and it is like water.

I've used Valvoline Full Synthetic 10w-30 since day one.....

About a month and a half ago I got involved in a pretty detailed question and answer session with the Red Line Oil expert on "viscosity", flow rates etc. There is so much misunderstanding out there (including by me) its incredible. The bottom line from the research was that between the two choices go with 10W-30.

Mobil 1 deal at Pep Boys

Pep Boys has a great deal on Mobil 1 Synthetic. Buy a MADD Cool Car Calendar for $1.00 and inside of it you will find a coupon for Mobil 1, buy 3 get three free. It's on till 12/31/04. I use the 5w 30w, I had to go back three times because they were out. I bought three cases when it came in. Great Deal.Save the Wave.>George

In an LT4, driven in any place other than Alaska or Northern Canada or some place that's really, really cold, you want to use 10W30. The problem with 5W30 is that it's a little thin for high-performance use with best durability. In fact, if you do autoX or track day events with that 96, you definitely want to change. 5w30 uses a higher percentage of VI improvers to get the wide vis. range. The VI improvers do nothing for lubrication and, when oil temperature gets really high (during severe duty) they shear down, their VI ability is somewhat degraded and the oil thins a bit.

Bottom line, Mobil 1 10W30 is a better choice and a premium, ester-based synthetic is even better.

Pep Boys Calendar

By the way, I picked up a couple of the calendars this weekend, and those coupons are good until 12/31/05!
Combine the Mobile1 coupon with the Purolator PureOne coupon, and it's a pretty good deal!

Is the PureOne rated as a good filter?

I just put on a NAPA (WIX) and took off an ac delco. I was looking at them & noticed the rubber gasket on the wix was about 2/3 as wide as the ac. I have no leaks so I guess it's ok, but was surprised to see the high rated wix with a thin gasket:eek

What would be a better choice of brand?

Yes, it is an excellent filter. Sometimes, you can even catch some nice coupons like 2 for $10 in the paper. Even at regular price, they're only around ~$7.00, which is less than Mobil 1 or K&N.

Tip:

Take a look at German Castrol Syntec 0w30 (actually viscosity is more like 0w40)
or
Mobil 1 European 0w40

Both are EXCEPTIONAL oils

If you do enough research, you'll end up there :-) .....you can buy both at Auto Zone
