Help! 6-speed reverse lock-out rattle

My reverse lock-out ring on the six speed rattles incessantly. Is this a common problem? Does anyone know of a cure (other than keeping my hand on the shifter)?
I've only had the car for four months and it has always done this. Also, this is my first Corvette so I don't have any past history to go by.

The spring below it may be broken or missing.
You will have to remove the knob to check it.

You may want to also check for cracks where the set screw tightens the lock-out ring. It is plastic and can crack. This will either give you a rattle or difficulties getting it into reverse smoothly.
Not a bad fix either way.

I agree with the above posts. Access to the lock out ring is easy. Take a small flat head screw driver and pry the 6speed shifter pattern off (suggest you use a cloth so that you don't scratch anything). Then remove the knob by unscrewing it. Check the lock out ring direction before removing it so you don't put in back up side down. Once corrected, replace the knob and shifter pattern and you are good to go.

After you pry off the shift pattern plate you first must remove the locking "wedge" which locks the shift knob in place. Then you unscrew the knob.

In fact, if that wedge is missing, that could be part of your problem.

The tiny yet mighty set screw

Thanks for all of the good advice. I worked on it last night and it appears to be a problem with that little set screw. I don't have the right tool to work with it so it will have to wait for this weekend when I have time to beg, borrow, or buy the little driver that I need.
