63 Power Steering Question

I just installed power steering on my 63. I once read that the inside holes on the spindle should be used for power and the outside holes for manual. Can anyone varify this information. Thanks in advance. Sal

That's correct. In fact, I think the outside holes had rivets in them from the factory when power steering was supplied as a factory option. My understanding is that use of the outside holes with power steering can potentially cause interference problems with the power steering.

I agree but I have never had a midyear with power steering. Guess I need the excercise. I have always moved the tie rods to the inner holes for the faster steering ratio. Only requires a little more steering effort. Don't forget to get the front end aligned after you change to the inner holes.

I already made an appointment. Thanks Tom. Does anyone know if an 8" wide rim will fit under the car without any clearance problems.

Guys used to run 8" rallys all the time. Not sure on the tire size but 225/70 should work. You just need to be real careful that the front don't bounce going into a drive with the wheels turned. They will bust out your wheelwell. Maybe a lower profile tire would get the clearance needed. I'm sure there are members here that can tell you for sure.

A lot of newer folks in the Corvette world are unaware that on these mid-years, in addition to being able to adjust the steering between standard and quick ratio (on the manual steering cars), the manual 4-speed transmission linkage and clutch linkage is also adjustable between standard throw and a shorter (but stiffer, requiring more effort) throw. Just thought I'd throw that in as an item of interest!
