66 Differential

Can I use a 1971 Corvette rear in a 66 Corvette. My rear is shot but Ican purchase a complete 71 rear to replace internals, are they the same, if not what is differences, posi, ring & pinion, etc.

Yes, you can - everything will bolt right up. If you're going to rebuild it before you install it, use the solid clutch plates - the '71 has the "snowflake" clutch plates, which leave something to be desired in terms of durability. GTR1999 will probably chime in with much better info. :)
 
Hey John, You covered it but I'd like to add these pictures of a used 74 differential. There is no way of knowing the condition of the clutches buying a used differential and not going through it. This one came apart in many many pieces BUT looked and felt ok when it was assembled. Again, you can buy a used differential and install it but why if you're going through all the work, not go through it? This one would have locked up in short order and possibly wreck the very expensive parts.

Here are the posi kits I make up for buddies- steel clutches,full shim kit, washers, additive and my own setup instructions. I'm doing one today in fact:)
