68 front grilles

This is a very interesting thread.I think running changes are an industry standard for all makes it's just that most of what was built wasn't collectable so nobody knows/cares about them.I work at Gulfstream Aerospace,we build the G4-G5.There are enginering changes made daily, also assembly changes. You guys are right.I would love to get the take from the NCRS guys.I'll bet both are correct it's just finding the cut off date but then again someone said that all 68-69 were chrome on the edges,so the mystrey goes on.I'll bet our wifes would think we are a little insane over what they would think is insignifacant.

Thanks Chuck....
I would love to hear an NCRS judge's take on this...
Your statement directly contradicts the 68-82 Restoration Guide.
Do plastic parts from that era have a date stamp??

I had to double check the 68-9 NCRS JG. According to the current JG, it states:

"Front grilles consist of three black plastic pieces with horizontal bars. For all of 1968 production through January of 1969, the leading edges of these bars are painted silver. In later cars, the grill is all black. Intermediate cars have been seen with the top bar only unpainted while lower ones are painted silver. Original cars with a painted center grill and unpainted outer grilles have also been seen."

No date stamp.

Thank you very much Chuck.....I wonder why the Resto Guide by Mr. Prince states the exact opposite, could be his proofreaders at the publishing house goofed.

Bagger, buy the black ones and paint them silver! Thats the way they came back then, so sayeth ChuckG.

Have seen 68 with silver & black... But again, my 68 bought new had silver grills.

Under the Tech Center tab, select "Gallery" and go to the 1968 page. There are 2 vettes pictured (black and blue) and both appear to have silver painted grilles.

Silver

I bought my 68 in 72. The car was original in every respect. The front grills on my car are black with silver on the leading edge. Over time the silver can flake off. Jerry
