how can you identify a 1968 L88 by only reading the cars vin? or does gm or anyone else have any records of those vins? someone told me that you can't tell by reading the vin. i saw a supposed L88, but the vin just read the same as a bb coupe with certain options when i checked in the corvette black book. any info would be greatly appreciated.

Nope, there's no engine ID information in a '68 VIN; you have to look for all the various L-88 "clues" around the car (all of which can be faked by a knowledgeable restorer), or rely on original paperwork, tank sticker, etc. Only 80 1968 L-88's were built, and only 150 or so are left ;LOL
