Recently purchased 2001 6sd. When coming off idle in first gear I hear what I believe to be engine knock/ping but have been told that this is commomnly referred to as 6spd "rattle". How do I know the difference? Vehicle is fine in other gears when under load no noise. If it is knock would I get SES indications(have not). If this is knonk/ping should the knock sensors let me know? If it's the 6spd rattle whats rattling and can it/ should it be fixed? Thanks for your replies new C-5 owner.

Do you have the owner's packet that was delivered with the vehicle? If so, watch the video, it discribes this noise. Mine has done it since new, and in >60K miles, it hasn't changed.

Basically it has to do with the transmission mounted in the rear of the car. There are others on this forum that could explain it better, but this noise is nothing to worry about.

Normal. Some have described it as sounding like marbles in a can. I have heard it has something to do with the harmonic resonance from the torque tube. Try giving your car a bit more throttle off the line when engaging the clutch in 1st. The sound should go away. Nothing to fix here.

If the rattling noise stops then you've got a problem :)
After a few days you won't even give it a thought. It is a big heavy duty machine it has to make some sounds. If you hear any crunching, screeching or cracking sounds then start to worry anything else is usually not a problem.

Enjoy the heck out of your Corvette!
