After finally getting my new toy inspected ( yes I live in a place where you have to have all of your emission stuff in place :bash ) I started driving it more often....My question is this......During normal driving ( AFTER the car warms up ) it shifts into 2nd @ 10mph ~ 1500rpm , 3rd @20 mph ~1500rpm , & OD @25 ~1400 rpm....The car is very sluggish ( is that a word ??? ) at low speeds..acts like it doesnt want to down shift at the low RPM's.....sort of acts like a standard tranny that someone tries to take off in 3rd or 4th gear...before it finally decides to downshift to another......At the higher speeds and WOT it's fine

Side Note........this car has been sitting up for awhile...... milage is 84,000

This is common for 82's. Many or us have installed the Hypertech ThermoMaster chip for more modern programming. The chip installs in minutes, preformance and down-shifts are more responsive. An additional 20hp is one claim and it feels like it. My 82's are more fun to drive since installing the chip. I found the least expensive at www.autozone.com - somwhere around $120-130.

Unfortunately the chip doesn't control the *shifting* of the transmission - it just controls the torque converter clutch (TCC.) It may *feel* different but it's not.

What you need to do is set the TV cable properly, it may not be set right.

If you want it to shift better, a shift kit is really what you want - get a Transgo kit, NOT a B&M kit. Look on www.bulkpart.com for the SK700 shift kit, that's what I have in mine.

early 700's are trouble from what ive heard and experienced. the car was on its second gm reman tranny (another 82) when i got it, and then that one died. went with a stage 2/3 700 from 87. imnot quite sure about the internals but ive been told the pump is stronger and there are more options for a torque converter becuase it has a diff number of splines. so far the B&M tranny hold up great to the power i have and i got it for 700+110 freight off ebay =) with a year warranty. great for a quick drop into 2nd when crusin around to get some nice fishtail action goin on ;-)

anyone want two 700's for parts? lol

Wish I was close enough, I'd come grab them in a heartbeat! I have an '82 that I rebuilt the 700 in - the trick is not just to put in a shift kit, but do all the other upgrades. I've upgraded my pump, the sun shell, clutches, rear planetary, etc. Lots of little "tricks" to keep them from crapping out.
