We are having "gas smells" in our '72 when we drive it and especially with the back window out. Is the gas tank cap vented or does it run lines up to the engine where the fumes are reburned or something like that? I put a new lock gas cap on and the cork gasket doesn't seem to fit the cap very well and comes off when you take the cap off. Any info or suggestions would be appreciated.

Nope, it's a sealed system. There are rubber hoses that connect the charcoal cannister, the vapor valve and such to the gas tank and the carburator. Perhaps one of those has deteriorated. Another possibility could be a rust hole in the fuel filler neck. One would need to pull the rubber boot on the filler neck back to check it. There is also a gasket between the fuel filler neck and gas tank which could have went wonky with age also.
