I have replaced the speedo cable, transducier, nylon gear into the trans. the speedometer will work in first gear but when I shift, it stops, sometime as I drive it will start and work fine for hours. Could it be at the dash that the gears are worn. All help will be appreciated. thans bob.

Not sure what a transducier is but the speedometer in a 73 is pretty simple.

There's a drive gear on the output shaft, there's a driven gear in a holder that goes into the tailshaft, there's a cable and a speedometer in the dash.

You've eliminated some of the possibilities. You need to inspect the drive gear's condition and, since the car is 40 years old, you might as well overhaul or replace the gauge in the dash.

I'm guessing by transducer, Bob G is referring to a cruise control transducer? My 73 doesn't have cruise so I'm not sure...

Disconnect the speedo cable from the cruise control transducer. Chuck the end in your drill and turn on the drill on slow speed. If the cable and connection are good, the speedo will show mph. If the cable and connection are good, but the speedo is acting up on the drill, you could need a speedo head.

If the speedo works on the drill, your problem is between the cruise transducer and the tranny.

Oops. I forgot about the cruse control module. I didn't realize cruise was an option back then.

With the 82, my Wife and I once owned, the cruise module did go out and when it did, the speedo got funky so, the posts above which discuss that are certainly better on the mark than was my initial post. Sorry 'bout that.

Note: The drill must be run in reverse. :)
