My 78 has a Pioneer KEH 2929 Stereo/casette player and the front speakers are not connected. They are the originals and I am planing to replace them. I don't have the wiring diagram for the radio but I can see the rear speaker wires where they hook up. Can i just splice into them for the fronts or do they need to be hooked up to some other leads?:confused

If the radio has a front/rear balance control (which I suspect it does), then there has to be a separate set of terminals for the front.

Thanks 73shark, I'm trying to find a wiring diagram and manual for the Pioneer radio but evryone wants $25 or more just for the manual. I'll buy a new one before spending that for just the manual. I'll be under there trying to find the leads. I looked at trying to pull the radio but the hex screws into the bezel all seem to be stripped.

color codes should be standard for just about every headunit out there. I just finished putting in the replacement radio in my car. I can take a look when I get home tonight and put that info up here for you. (I am assuming that your headunit no longer has the little identifier tags on the wires?)

I'll see if my Google-Fu is strong today. I may be able to find you the proper color codes for the wiring.

Let me ask you this too...you say that you can see where the rear are hooked up. You should see an additional set of wires (2x2) coming out of the radio or the pigtail that aren't being used, no? Those would be the wires for the front speaker. Or am I to understand that you have those wires, but can't find the wires coming from the front speakers themselves?
In my car (which was seemingly bastardized ten times over before I got it), the passenger front was accessible by removing the glovebox. (5 or 6 screws to do that)

Pioneer color codes - make sure you have the correct year-range selected

Chevy color codes - Can't confirm these for as far back as 1978, but it seems correct from my recollection.

Thanks for the info. I would appreciate any list of the color codes for the wiring. I am going to se if I can see behind the radio tonight, it should be easier since I have the seats out and am about to refoam and put the new covers on them. I'm putting new speakers in the dash and can see both ends from the original speakers. I am assuming the front speakers were no good so who ever had the car before just didn't hook them up when they put the new radio in.
Thanks again

What I gave ya should work.
I put a pair of correct-sized Pioneers in the front dash. They sound fine! Any new speakers you buy will include enough wire to reach your head unit.

Thanks, I think your reply could not have been any faster. This is one fantastic site. My 78 would not have survived the last couple of years without it.

From the 1980 shop manual which should be the same for the '78 model.

Thank you again, I actually have a laminated 24x36 wiring and vacuum diagram all color coded from a guy that sold them at the Vette Fest in Chicago. I can't remember his name but I will look tonight for it.
