Question for the experts.... I remember reading somewhere that the timing mark position on the 8" harmonic balancer was changed along the years.

I am building a non-correct 365 clone for my 64 and want to make sure I get a matching timing cover/balancer (not the original finned balancer) so when I set the timing, it will be correct. Can someone point me in the right direction? I only want to buy these parts once.

Thanks a bunch. :beer

I believe JohnZ was the one who posted this comment on one of the corvette forums in the past month or so. I'm not sure which one since searches aren't working here yet:

The offsetting of the timing index mark on the balancer 9 degrees counter-clockwise from the keyway (and the corresponding change in the tab on the timing cover) occurred on passenger cars in 1969, and didn't occur on Corvettes until well into the C3 era. If someone installed a "late" balancer with the index line 9 degrees counter-clockwise from the keyway, you need a "late" timing cover with the same offset.

I recently installed a new 8" balancer on my 383 engine. I verified the timing tab pointer by installing the balancer and rotating my crank until the #1 piston was at top dead center. The mark on the balancer lined up perfectly with the pointer 0 mark, hence I knew I was ok.

Thanks Doug. John caught me up on the other forum with the same info. Thanks for the reply just the same.
