81 corvette crossmember auto to manual

Sights 'n Sounds

I cant wait to get mine converted to the manual trans. I have already "seat test drove it" with the 4 speed, meaning I have pretended it had the 4 speed in it! I love to look out through the windshield and look over the silouette of the fenders going through the gears, feeling the torque and sound!.................soon!

Hi Andy,

Try this in the meantime:

Changing the pedals in the car may be a very hard challenge. I have been upside down in the car today, several times looking at the pedal assy and I dont think it is going to be an easy task. if anyone has changed them in the car, lets hear about it. I have talked to several people that have claimed to have done it, but they cant seem to remember how they did it.

Making More Room

Hi Andy,

Think you would need to remove the left side A/C vent duct, headlight override switch panel on the bottom of the steering column, loosen the two bolts on the bottom of the steering column, release the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer, remove the speedo/tach cluster gauge panel. With the speedo/tach cluster half way out unscrew the VSS sensor in the back of the speedometer head area and the cluster will come out.
To remove the left side A/C vent, just push back slightly on the rear of the A/C vent and the plasctic duct will come off the vent, then pull down slightly and to the left to release the duct from the center duct channel and the LH A/C duct will come right out.
When I removed the cluster to install a 140mph speedo, had to push down on the steering column a little bit so the cluster would clear the ignition switch area of the column to get it over the steering column. The steering wheel is still attached. Just take your time since the cluster is plastic and it will come out.
After the cluster comes out, there will be a bigger area to work on the pedals. Think the speedo/tach cluster panel has to come out anyway if one swaps out the entire brake pedal & bracket assembly.
Guess the guys who went throught the pedal change had such a horrible experience, they have memory block !

Hope this helps.

Clutch Pedal Conversion

Well...
Had to remove the speedometer cluster to fix a bad connection on my Check Engine Light bulb and seems easier to remove the existing automatic brake pedal assembly than leaving the bracket in place and installing the manual pedals- not too much room to work the ratchet/open ends.
There are two top bolts on the top of the brake pedal assembly that bolts to the upper cowl panel which can be accessed with the speedo cluster out. There are additional bolts behind the power brake booster that goes through the firewall.

Hi Paul,
How did you manage to get the automatic brake pedal assembly out and over the steering column & install the clutch/brake pedal assembly which is wider ?
Did you have to remove the dash pad or had enough room to navigate the pedal assembly around the steering column without removing the dash ?
