I just put a new rebuilt engine in my '81 coupe & I installed a new temperature sending unit with the motor. I can not get the temperature guage to work. The new engine has fuel injection & so I've disconnected the "old" computer & use the "new" computer that came with the engine.
Does the temperature use anything in the old computer (I don't think so) & if not what am I missing??

Thanks for your help ...

Kelly&Don: -Temp./Sending-units come in many different Ohm-ratings (electrical-resistance) so probably its just a matter of providing the correct such sensor(you can test their resistances yourself on a cheap RadioShack-meter), -so write down the cold-readings on both sensors along with their respective stamped-on part-numbers; -then believe that a good Chevy/Parts-counter would be the best bet (tell them of the problem you are having), otherwise a casual stroll back to the Chevy-dealer's Technician who works on such animals can often do wonders in "hands on advice". Short of that, if you know anyone having your same model Vette-equipment('82?), -then simply switch their OK-sensor on to your engine to see if that fixes the problem (if so, -then hand'em your NG-sensors and drive-away quickly)!.... ~Bob vH

Thanks for the help - I'll look into that ... any other suggestions???

Water temp sender info

On the side of the block
there should be a sender ( single pin. spade style lug) with a dark green wire.. that is the one for the gauge... ground it to the chassis.

Does the gauge work now?

If so, the sender is either INSULATED from the block ( with teflon tape or other sealant) or is the wrong range.. I assume this WAS working.

Do this test first.. then we can proceed.

Oh and the computer has NOTHING to do with the temp gauge.. but there ARE other water temp senders which DO talk to the computer.
