Need some Wiper Trouble Shooting thoughts on the following problem: Wipers radomly operate on their own as I drive along. The wipers begin to move off the rest position slightly, then return to rest and stop moving or they continue to run (wipe back & forth) until I manually play with the wiper switch, which sometimes appear to have some control or the wipers just appear to stop on their own.
This problem started after working on a previous problem, where the wipers began to operate intermittently and then finally stopped running. After many hours of checking the moving parts of the system; the arms / linkage, the motor (tried a rebuilt) & wiper switch, no change in problem. Finally found the control modual located under the tool tray (located behind the passenger seat) had fallen out of it's holding bracket and was laying with the solder side of the PCB against the car jack, electrically short circuiting the controller. I removed and visually inspected the control modual, no signs of burnt circuits or components. After re-installing the controller, wiper appeared to operate normally for a week or two, until it started to run on it's own.
Currently I have un-plugged the electrical connector on the wiper motor. I also had the wiper motor drive gear cover open, didn't see any broken or worn out parts, re-lubed same. Notice that there is metal contact on a thin metal band that makes contact with a small diameter shaft, really not sure on it's function , I believe it tells the controller when the wipers have made a full wipping cycle & if the wiper switch is off the motor should move the rest point.
Any words of wisdom out there or a trouble shooting / functional source for the wiper system / controller?
A different approach would be to by pass wiper controller! Anyone out there with experience in re-wiring control circuits to have wiper work directly from panel switch, even if delay function is dis-abled???
