82 700r4

Does anyoneknow if there is a short and a long version of the output shaft on a 1982 700r4. I had a HP 700r4 built to swap out my old unit. The builder told me to use the old tail housing. But when I put it on, my housing was about 3/4" longer than the output shaft.the housing measures 7 1/4 from flange to seal. He told me that is the way all Vettes are.
Now here's the part I don't get. My repair manual from GM shows the correct length for my old tranny. And I very sure that it is the original because of original decals and other info on the car from previous owner. (I am the second). Also, does anyone know where to get this shorter housing? And what are the dimensions like for the mount? Will it be in the same place as my old crossmember mount?
