82 Sport mirror Retrofit

Could someone please explain how to retrofit a set of 82 sport mirrors to my 75. I can't see how you would get the nuts on the mirror once you get it mounted. The inner steel door linner doesn't have the right holes to get at the nuts and I can not see how to drill it without hacking it up. Has anyone does this to theirs ? Thanks for the help. Dewayne

...that I won't be much help.

Are the 82 sport mirrors the same or similar to my 78 sport mirrors? If so, I would think that you could drill holes to match where you need them, and/or install a plate for them to affix to.

When you comment about getting the nuts on the mirror after mounting...do you mean inside the mirror housing?...or do you mean inside the door?

If you mean inside the door and no holes are matching up, I think you may need to do some fabricating or customizing.

I've done it.

A few months ago. I installed sport mirrors. The mirrors came from a 1978 Camaro. To fit them to my 1977 Corvette, I did the following;

1.) Removed Interior Door panel.
2.) Removed holding screw (allen wrench) on the mirror (outside of car)
3.) Removed the 2 mounting bracket screws. (located inside of door, accessability granted by door panel removal)
4.) Placed Camaro mounting bracket on Corvette door, and marked where the new holes would go.
5.) Drill out holes.
6.) Install new mounting bracket.
7.) Install new sport mirror.

It was a little scary to drill into the door, however everything worked out fine and it looks good.

First, did your car already have an add-on passenger side mirror? If it didn't just be careful and make sure that there is reinforcement behind the new mirror. I've seen early shark doors with ugly patch jobs where a mirror was literally mounted with nothing more than a backing plate behind the fiberglass on the passenger side. Somebody walks past or leans and hits the mirror and cracks the door.
