Still looking for my first vette. I have probably looked at well over 100 vettes in person. I have been exercising a great deal of patience in the search and have finally found 2 cars that really grab my attention. One is an 82 Collectors Edition (original owner w/ all supporting documentation) 37K miles and the other is a 89 convertible with 21K miles(original owner w/all supporting documentation). Both cars look great and have been obviously very well taken care of. Both parties are asking roughly the same price. I know each model has its pros and cons. I like both body styles, but would like a vette that will hold its value and I could sell easily in the future if I ever want. Any thoughts or opinions out there that may help me in my decision? Thanks

82CE

But that is just me.
I like the curves of the C3s, and Collector's Edition gives it that extra little bit of collectability.

I think you need to decide what you want out of a vette?

The differences between these two choices (82 and 89) are huge. The 82 has lots of eye appeal while the 89 is superior in technology over the 82. Either way you decide, it appears that you have narrowed down to the two best choices presented to you, and both have single owners, documentation and low miles to offer. I'd say it's a pretty even toss-up.
I'd buy the one with the best condition and maintenance records.

Good luck with your decision.

It's all a matter of what you plan on doing with the car. If you are only going to drive it a little (aka weekend toy), then I'd go with the 82. I think it will keep it's value more than the 89. If you plan on driving it more then go with the 89 as it is a world of difference in driving than the 82. As much as I love my 88 I still think the C3s were the best looking years. My $0.02!

Obviously i`m biased and would pick the 89 convert, you can`t beat topless cruising. What is the asking price?I bought an 89 vert with 39,000 miles in november from a preson i knew who had it since it had less than 1,000 miles. When it gets said and done You will have 2 make the pick.I love mine, its tight as a drum,no squecks, doesnt leak anything, runs real strong,I drove it home over 1,200 miles from florida and driving with the top down was awesome.People commented everywhere i stopped.I`ve owned motorcycles before and this is close as you can get to biking but better.Just mt .02 worth, good luck either way you won`t make a wrong decision.

If resale is a factor, I'd say the '82 is a better choice. But I also think the '89 will hold its value if you keep in in relatively good condition with low miles. I had an '89 convert for 2 years, when I sold it, it sold for $500 less than what I paid for it (and the only $$ I put into it was gas).
It was also lot's of fun to drive with the top down on a warm summer night...and I'm not that big on convertables either.
But after a few years, I opted for a C3, 'cuz you just can't beat the looks!:)

I say go for the 82! It is very unique as it is the only shark with the opening hatch and fuel injection. Plus C3 is such a great looking body style. Just my.02

From a pure eye candy standpoint, I'd pick the '82 CE. Gorgeous car! As others have said, it really depends on what you want out of the car. The '89 will out-perform the '82 in every respect and there is just something special about convertibles. If you plan on doing your own wrenching, the C4 cars are quite easy to work on from an accessibility standpoint. The late C3 cars are a bit crampt with the combination of a relatively narrow hood and all the emissions equipment, etc.

I'm NOT knocking the C3 cars...they are beautiful, classic shapes. I'd pick the one you enjoy driving the most and/or are most comfortable in.

Good luck!

You really can't go wrong with either one. The 82 is a Collector car but the 89 is a convertible, which seems to hold its value quite well.

The 89 does have the L98 motor, which is supposed to be relatively easy to modify. I don't know much about the 82 so I can't comment on that.

Let us know whatever choice you make. Whichever way you go, it won't be wrong!

what about the transmissions... are they both autos, or manuals... and what is your preference with that? it makes a big difference to some people.

Thanks for your opinions. I really do appreciate them. Both cars are automatic. The choice would be much easier for me if the 89 was manual (I would pick it for that reason).

I see you live in Chicago....I lived there 20 yrs,no way would i want a manual if i lived there.I don`t need that kind of a workout on my left leg....something 2 think about.

I guess the only way to really choose is to drive both of them (if that is practically possible).

One thing I can tell you is that you shouldn't rush your decision whatever it is. Buying a Vette' is totally different than buying a Camry. Your Vette' will be your proud and joy so you've got to take the time and make a good choice.
