Attention all 84-86 owners. This week, I had to replace my drivers side, power window ribbon which broke on the way to work during the week. I ordered the part from Mid America Motorworks. A number of years ago, I replaced the passenger side ribbon and it is a pain to deal with. At that time, I ordered the part from Ecklers.
Both of those stores are good for service, parts, etc. However, I found the part they sold me can be purchased at AutoZone and probably any other parts store right off the shelf. When my ribbon arrived, it was packaged in a blister-pac box that says Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth on the packaging. In the upper, left-hand conrer is the number 74413. They placed a sticker on the clear portion of the package that has their part number and the words 84-86 power window ribbon.
Well, the one I received was defective. As soon as I started to unroll it and slide it on the track, the portion that mounts to the window moving frame broke clean away. So I thought I was out of luck, but decided to take the box and the broken ribbon to AutoZone. The guy typed in the number 74413 into the computer and said I have two on the shelf. He went to get it and sure enough, it's the exact same item, in the exact same packaging.
It cost me $12.99 instead of $28 after shipping as the Mid America Motorworks part. So, the moral to the story is, if you need to replace your window ribbon on an 84-86, head to AutoZone and buy this part. However, if you ask them for a power window ribbon for an 84 Corvette, it wont be in the computer. So you have to get lucy and find things out by chance, the way I did. To bad I didn't know that before buying my first one. But hopefully MidAmerica Motorworks will do the right thing and refund my entire purchase price as the item was defective.
