84 C-4 Headlight continues to run

Drivers side headlight continues to run when lights are turned off. I have the harness unpluged for now. Replacements are for both at @ 790.00 OUCH! ANy body have a quick trouble shoot guide before a flash the cash?

You need either a Gear kit or Gear bushings!! Could run $10.- $80. depending what you need, plus about 2 hr's of your time!! I'll see if I can find you some De-Structions!!

My 88's headlights started to do the hokey-pokey, after changing headlight module, headlight switch, it turned out to be those friggin plastic bushings...............

Just returned from Funfest" Midamerica, Gordon Kilbrew was there and this question came up, he said 99.9% of the time it will be the bushings, Mine went bad Friday night and it just so happened he had one out to repair. The easy way is to remove the headlight assembly, I think there was four bolts and unplug wire harness, then you can put it on work bench. Should be about twenty minute job

88 had different set up, no bushing in 84 motors. You definetly need new gears.

less common failure 84-87 is the ''limit switches'' inside the headlight motor (mine did it , right side only, long ago)...the drive assembly is ''spring loaded'' and major parts of the assy ''move'' when travel of the rotating headlight reaches an ''end stop'', directly activating ''contacts'' in the assy to interrupt current flow to the motor (these contacts/moving parts were replaced for 88-96 by the remote controller)...''contacts'' in my motor had ''welded'' shut, simple repair with no new parts, minor learning curve to open the motor assy.

relatively simple mod to wire the 84-87 units to use the 88+ remote controller and the early internal limit switches can be left in place.

headlight assy is held in the car by (4) nuts and (2) hex head screws, a ''deep'' 10mm socket gets all -- and a few electrical wire clips/ connectors...elec connectors on early c4's are internally notched to prevent incorrect hook-up, altho externally the connectors look identical...not really reqd, but removing the inner fender (attached to the hood by eight torx head screws) only takes a couple of minutes and makes headlight assy r&r AND alignment in the hood opening easier for rookies.

this is one of those things that looks much, much harder to work on than it is.

FYI, the 1984 Vettes have headlight motor GEARS, the 1988-96 models have Delrin bushings.
