Changed the fluid in the 84 today. The slight slip in had around 40 MPH is no longer. Fluid looked okay, but the filter was pretty dirty. When I touched the filter you can actually see blackness in the filter. I'm hoping this was preventing the fluid from reaching the pump.

Any thoughts on the dirty filter?

162K, so far so good.

I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Tranny Filter

Put a magnet on the old filter. If you pull metal out then you can plan on a rebuild (that many miles, its getting close). If it does not pull metal than the black stuff is either dirt or aluminum from the case which is not nearly as bad.

Tranny fluid should be changed once a year or every 15,000 miles if you want the best performance.

Dex III works best.

Ron,
thank you, I'll keep that in mind. I did dispose of the filter, I would have like to have known if it was dirt/aluminum from the casing.

The car appears to go into gear better when first started and the "slip" at 40 mph appears to be gone.

Tranny Filter

Dirt in the fluid can cause the second gear clutches to slip so clean fluid will cure some of the problem. When you had the pan down, did you put a drain plug in it? If so then drain and replace the fluid in about 3 months it will improve it more.

If it is shifting normally then I think it was dirt in the fliter.

Remember most of the fluid is not in the transmission it is in the cooler, lines and mostly, the torque converter.

I replaced the fluid because in the morning after the car is warmed for 10/15 minutes it was taking 3 or 4 seconds to go into drive, reverse is fine. I drive the car like I drive my family car 95 percent of the time, but when I punch it from a dead stop at around 40 mph I would feel a slip and then it would grab and go after 1 or 2 seconds. Under normal driving conditions there is no slip, just when I punch it from a dead stop.

I changed the fluid for these two reasons. I did not drill in a drain plug. I've only owned the car for 6 months and have been working on the car for 6 months. Thats okay because slowly the car is coming along. I will install a drain plug when I change the fluid in tne spring.

Just a quick question, one of the 13 mm pan housing holes is striped, what size would you tap it to?

Thanks for your help, its sure valuable.

Trans Pan Bolt

I would helicoil it. I'm not sure what the next SAE size would be, I've never measured one, I believe that is a 5/16 or 3/8 thread diameter. I'll ask Jim at Earls Transmission, my racecar sponsor.

FYI.
I use the Dearl pan, available from Jeg's.
1 1/2 MORE FLUID, with drain plug and cooling tubes.
I love this set up. Along with an aftermarket trans cooler.
Ask me, E-MAIL ME.
