84 vett dies then restarts in 5 minutes

Thanks

Well thanks for all the good advice. Since I just paid $1,600 to get my transmission rebuilt I did not want to take my car in for anymore service. That is why I have been trying to track this down myself, aside from the fact that it is good to know something about your vette.

I have not tried disconnecting the tach filter. I think its fine. But here is the latest. I did check the EGR valve again. It seemed to be functional when I pushed up on the bottom of it and put my finger over the line connection it did not bleed down. But! When I moved the plastic line to hook it up again it broke. It must have had a crack in it, maybe a leak. I fixed it with a line splice and went back out on the road. Twenty five miles later no problem. I am going to run it some more this afternoon.

Thanks Again

I had to drill/rebush the butterfly shafts. It was cheap; self done in rather short order with the kit I got, as was the rebuild of both throttle bodies. The TB metal is soft and wears easily; certainly with 130k, it's about time. The talk of TBIs reminded me of the shaft play.

The carbon might mean that fuel, unmetered by the ECM is entering the intake; i.e. leaking in from the TBs.

I don't know that I had every one of your symptoms, but I did have a problem with mine where it would run ok for just a few minutes, then start hesitating and coughing and carrying on. If I kept the rpms up, it seemed to run better.

What is your indicated voltage? Mine would drop down to 11.0 or below and then the car would stall. It turned out to be the alternator, it was only putting out good voltage above 2000 rpm or so. After I had the alternator rebuilt, all the problems went away.

a source for the re-bush kit

that was a while ago. Lemme check.

Final comment

It is always satisfying to find and soulve a problem. Thanks for all the help. With 130,000 miles on the car I expect future issues. I will consider rebuilding the TBIs but have not seen black smoke since I found the vacuum leak in the EGR line. This was an interesting thread to follow. I will print it out for future reference.

I put 50 miles on the car since the vacuum line fix and have not had a single problem.

Ray, the tach buffer as a possible source of the problem never entered my mind. My tach has been working great since you fixed the buffer.
