I have an '86 vette I just bought to restore and the digital cluster flashes on and off during acceleration. I was told that it is a pretty easy DIY fix and was going to pull the cluster in the morning.
Has anyone ever fix the cluster and if so what should I expect?

Mine went out everytime I hit a bump. Took it apart and retouched about 40 solder joints on the power supply board, I also had to replace the ribbon cable from the power supply board to the main board.

The hardest part is getting it out of the car, follow the procedure in a Haynes manual or instructions here.

Be careful of the LCD displays, they are about $160 apiece if you have to replace them and they are hard to find to boot.

Use good soldering and ESD practices and you should be ok.

This place has some good information also, but their site seems to be down right now:

Batee Corvette

Good Luck.

Batee is back up and thanks great site for someone just new to the digital dash

I have removed the cluster and I was told to look for a crack or burn mark on the board. I have removed the first board from the cluster and don't see anything suspicious.
Should I remove the second board from the cluster and if id od, will the displays come out also. Does anyone know?:confused

If I remember right, assuming the cluster is lying on its face, the displays are on the bottom, then the display board is on top of the displays with fine conductive fingers going everywhere to touch the various parts of the display. There wasn't a need to remove this board, but I did it anyway because I like to take things apart.

Be gentle and make sure you notice how everything is arranged because some of the parts can move a little. Don't do it if you aren't sure of your abilities...anyway, the main processor board was above that, it was also a full length board also. Then the power supply and odometer boards above that. I had the main board out several times but the soldering was all done on the small power supply board.

I never did find a burn and I couldn't see the cracks but the solder joints seem to deteriorate over time and retouching them should fix the problem assuming that there aren't any failed components.

I want to Thank everyone for their help but I just shipped the thing to Indiana to get it repaired. I looked with a big magnifying glass and light and couldn't find anything cracked or burnt. And I am not skilled enough to replace the chips. I am off to start working on the next thing. Isn't it nice to have something to keep me so busy.

No playground for the devil here ;worship

Let me know how much you want I still have til Monday to cancel I think. I will call the place to see if they shipped the exchange or not

PS
They are going to charge me $213 to exchange it with a one year warranty

I can't beat that deal. Mine is a new one and cost me a lot more than that; I gotta get a little more. ;)
