1986 black convertible pace car
Is there anything special that my 86 pace car recieved option wise other
than the little badge on lower left dash?

It is a convertible with aluminum heads, but so are lots of Vettes.

anybody know or care?

BTW, my mechanic semi-fixed the non-functioning o/d unit on my
4+3, (selinoid would not engage unit) by removing pan & oil,
manualy engaged o/d unit, Now in 1st gear, at around
20 mph he car will shift into o/d and stay there until
I go back to 1st gear, its always in o/d, hopefully it lasts.

Someday would like to replace 4+3 w/ doug nash 5-speed, or equivelant.

Already replaced relay, switch on shifter, oil & filter,

This was a last resort fix before having to replace entire o/d unit, thats big $,

And its Sooooo nice to drive on the freeway again, have not been over 65 mph in 3 months!

here is a link I listed over in the Callaway section - the trans is worked specially for those cars - this company may have input for you...

Hope it helps :m

FWIW, 86 verts were all pace cars - plate on dash and a set of decals in the box (owner installed) were unique to this model -

Sure we care! You'll get plenty of response, just hang in there. ;)

I have never heard of that particular fix for an ailing overdrive unit, but I guess if it works...

I can't really see any harm in the fact that it is going ot be in overdrive all the time, but your performance will definitely suffer. It'd be like going to a very long gear, and you'll have a great top end, as well as good gas mileage on the road, but the bottom end "get-up-and-go" will be "gone." It'll seem very sluggish leaving stop signs and red lights, but no harm should come.

Ok, ok, you guys finally got me. What the hell are you two talking about? Is that phrase, or quote, ("On a hot summer night would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?" and "Would he offer me his hunger?") taken from a novel or something? :confused

Sounds like a great story, certainly better than the "worst writer awards" that appeared elsewhere here. ;LOL

Get him to fix it right. You will burn out your OD in no time keeping it engaged all the time.

Believe me, been there, done that!

Yeah, someone clued me in. Man, I must be gettin' old -- can't remember **** anymore! :hb

using 4+3 for boat anchor

you are all correct, I gave away my bottom end for top end.

whats worse, cruising down the freeway at 3500 rpms, or tip-toeing around town?

this is a temporary fix untill I can transplant a decent 5 or 6 speed.

I refuse to spend a ton of $ on the 4+3, just to have more probs
down the road,

I will run my 4+3 in o/d until it pukes.

thanx everybody for the feedback! Be nice this is my 1st Vette

86 pace car
*70k miles
*SLP intake,
*Flowmaster cat-back
*17" front 18" rear 2000 vette wheels
*Lots of TLC and $
*Bad 4+3

4/3

that 4/3 can be repaired to work correctly, often the problem is people bandaiding them and then they create greater problems. I did mine recently, followed the book and had some guidance from David Fulcher and It is perfect..yours is an 86 and does not have all the problems the early ones had...
