86 rear-end problem

Guys, just bought the 86 and need some help....
I have this "bearing whine" and I noticed the left rear wheel looks turned in slightly(like it is making a turn) viewed from behind the car it is straight up and down. Is this an adjustment or something serious?

It is something serious. From what you say it sounds like a wheel bearing has went bad. They are around 180 or so I believe. Can you move the tire at 12 and 6 any? If you can I think that that is your culprit.

Drivers side is first then the pass.

I installed a dana 44 in my 86 .

Your axle bearings and maybe the outer shaft spindle if you drive it to much.

I am looking for a dana 44 differential, to put in my car. Does anyone know of a good vette junkyard or a place to look. I have looked over at ebay a couple of times without any success. Thanks

Hey Vettefan, you will probably get more replies about looking for a D44 if you start a thread instead of hopping on someone elses problem.(No offense meant).

I'm taking it to a friend he has a lift ( and a couple older C3 vettes!) hopefully his shop will be empty and we can put it up and take a look, I hope it's not something too serious, I havent really had it out for a real ride yet, just to the local Pep Boys and back. I really dont want to drive it and wear out my tires!

My intention was not hijacking the thread. I thought that since redc4corvette put one in he might be able to direct me without starting a new thread. Sorry

Now back to the real problem, putting it up on a lift is a great idea IMO. This way you can actually stand under the car and look and see what is going on under your car, and not being cramped and not being able to move.

I'm going to build a "hideaway" next to the house behind a gate so i can get cramped under the vette and not have her find me!

Lottsa how to things going on out there, anything on the rear-end and suspension?

Do you have a HoneyDo list, you know, Honey do this, Honey do that.....

As far as the suspension goes that's one of my next projects, replacing bushings everywhere.

I paid $2500.00 for my dana 44 got it in california I will look up the Phone and put it on the thread .

The unit came rotor to rotor and were 3.33 gears.

Hey Redc, thanks for the links, I called Taber, and explained my symptoms and Sam told me that the problem is most likely a bad front bearing in the OD unit ($225.00)
and usually they change the 2 covers pieces ($650.00) not including the synchro problem - my local transmission guy wants $700.00 to pull it out and work on it
$$$$$$$ - now I need to find out whats wrong with the rear!
