My best friend has a problem with the O/D unit on his 87 4+3 trans. Normally, whenever he starts up and drives, the trans goes into O/D as soon as he goes into 2nd (which is normal). Now, whenever he pushes the button on top of the shifter, it won't go out of O/D. He has to hit the button perhaps a dozen times for it to finally drop out. Any suggestions.

faulty connection? too much gunk? try to check to see if the switch is good by using a DVM.

Had a similar problem with my 88 when I bought it. Ended up having to replace the OD switch, but you might try this first. Remove the button from the shifter and turn the t-rod one or two full turns clockwise. A small amount of wear might prevent the switch from being depressed far enough. Could be a quick, easy, but probably temporary fix.

If that doesn't work , replace the relay on the firewall . They are cheap and fix alot of problems with the 4+3 . Cliff
