I have an 87, I would like to introduce a turbo intake to my car. What is out there, what should I use, what kind of price are we talking about? I don't think that 2k would hurt me to much. If more than no big deal. What if anything would I need to do to optimize this upgrade? Note, some times, particularly when it envolves a car price is no issue.

What is a turbo intake? I dont understand what we are talking about here.

Woops sorry, turbo charger. turbo forced air induction. I have not seen alot of liturature on the subject.

This question has come up many times and nobody really has come up w/ a better mousetrap :(

A lot of good deals out there on Callaway Twin Turbo Corvettes right now - 17k-$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ big range of prices depending on the Callaway you would want:)

Look at the Callaway forum on this site and you will find a 90 for $23,900 - WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (w/ 30k on it)

Hope this helps.

Do you want to turbocharge your 87 or pick up another CORVETTE?

If you want to turbo your current VETTE, have you done any other mods?

:Silly :Silly :Silly

Maybe Ill just put twins on my 79? Wheres twinnie?

the 87 I just don't know where to look and what the extent of the mod needs to be.

You will need to first, lower the compression - figure new pistons at a minimum for this...

You will need exhaust manifolds/headers for the turbo's...

You will need the turbo(s)

fuel enrichment - and how will it enrich?? Manifold pressure related?

I would guess that it would be close to 10grand to do this on your own, and have it live for more than a day.

If it were me and my car, I would sell it and take the proceeds plus, your turbo money and buy a 1987 Callaway Twin Turbo or, the 1990 Twin Turbo I mentioned earlier :)

There is another company supposedly making a kit for LT1's but that has yet to be seen...

Good luck w/ the project.

If you are thinking about forced induction, have you considered a supercharger?

You could get a bolt on kit for around $5,5-6k and put that on top of your stock motor as long as you keep the boost at a conservative 6-8 psi.

You will not be able to get a "quality" turbo setup + installation for around $2k.

WHOA! Lol

Turbo's have alot of extra costs involved that don't meet the consumers eye. (Computers, Exhaust manifolds, Engine bay mod's, etc..)

Understand that "Turbo's" operate off of exhaust gas that powers an impeller that spins another impeller in another chamber to pump fresh air. Hence the reason for turbo lag ---> Step off the gas, no more exhaust, no more turbo.

Now I understand what your trying to do. Your trying to ram air down the mouth of your motor cheaply and effectively. Use SUPERCHARGER.

A Supercharger is not a exhaust operated unit but another pulley on the motor MUCH like a water pump. The pulley turns, the impeller spin...Volla! Air!. Now the disadvantage is ya its ANOTHER pulley.. (Not to big of a deal considering the power gain.)

Another cool thing about them is you can change the amount of "Boost" created by simply changing the pulleys size! (Can't do that so easy on a turbo)

Your will probably require a updated PROM/Computer but not a major problem.

As for money 2k is a little lean for these systems (Either one) 4k-6k is more accurate depending on what you pick.

Here are some site (I like the prochargers myself, they include intercoolers into the price/package)

www.procharger.com
www.paxtonauto.com
www.vortechsuperchargers.com

And if you want a turbo stick to the master...

www.callawaycars.com

Hope I helped you

Actuall, the turbo is far easier to adjust boost with a boost controller. it is as simple as turning a knob from the drivers seat, this will adjust the waste gate which controlls the amount of boost.

But I do agree, the supercharger is the way to go for price. they are usually around 5K

A turbo set up can throw you at 10K+ easily because of custom work/ labor.

You cant go out and buy a turbo kit for a C4, yet.

Remember that you can put a supercharger on a stock motor without worrying too much. If you turbocharged a stock motor... bad things will happen.

YOUR STOCK ENGINE W/ TURBOS :r

Cool I never knew that about the aftermarket turbo systems. I always thought it was adjusted from how sensitive the "pop" valve was.

Like what?

bill mcdonald -- Like what?

There are huge books written on this subject, but I'll give it a shot.
I hope this makes sense.

(typically) A turbo charged motor has to run a lower compression ratio. Around 8-9:1.
A stock motor was not designed to be turbo'd very easily.
If you were to add a turbo setup to a stock motor without the additional upgraded you would fry your motor.

Basically, to do it right, you would have to build the bottom end. Crank, rods, & pistons w/ lower compression.
And get a good intercooler.

If its on an EFI car, you are looking at a lot more "very important" upgrades.

I used to have a naturally aspirated PORSCHE 944 and a turbocharged 944.
They used the same block, same displacement 2.5l 4 cylinder, but it was amazing to drive one and then the other.
Unbelievable difference.

With good luck and GOD's grace, Ill pick up another 944 turbo this week.
How does 300hp to the wheels sound in a 2900lb car?
Sounds like fun to me.

;) ;) ;)

Dont get me wrong, I love my VETTE but there are so many more toys.

One word

Pre-detonation

With a higher compression engine VIA naturally aspirated, sticking a turbo on with burn up the valve train as well as the pistons.

So Im told.

I guess this is very similar to using NOS improperly as well.

This is all great information. 5K sounds a bit better than ten. I am glad I asked. I figured that this was the best place to get that type of help, I was correct. I do plan to put about 10K into the car but over a drawn out period and not just in the motor. Paint, stripping, carpet, door panels and things of that nature. The car is in good condition but the car is worthy of some investment in new stuff. Who wants to have a Vette that does not look close to perfect. The little things like a cracked console or loose door panel will drive me nuts. Even a small scratch in the paint will irritate me to no end.
