87 Vert top.

I recently aquired an 87 vert , it has a new top. The top doesn't release when I pull the lever, the only way to release is pull lever then start to fold the top, then it releases. I can do it this way ,but want to have it correct.. How do you , or can you adjust the top. Can I use later year pins , and connectors. Is there a solution, thanks Jim.
