Can anyone give me a good explanation how it works? More correctly - I want to know how to bypass the starter lockout if it has one. It has left me stranded on more than one occasion and I am sick of it.

Your ignition key has a resistor embedded in it. If the ECM can't read the correct value of the resistor It locks out the starter and fuel pump. there are 15 differant key value resistors. Most Vette parts suppliers like Mid america, Zip,corvette central sell kits to defeat the key resistor. To get the right kit you need to know which key you have(1-15) any GM dealer can get this for you by checking your key. Also you should take a pencil eraser and rub on the contacts of your key to clean it. If you insert the key and your vette won't start you have to wait 4 minutes for the ECM to allow the key to work. The GM term for this is VATS vehicle antitheft system. I hope I helped.

Too bad our search engine isn't functioning as it should yet; we've discussed this numerous times -- too numerous to count. :(

Theres a chart somewhere that shows which code is your key. You can check the ohm value with a multimeter and then compare it to the chart. I'll try to remember where I saw it.

Sorry I wasn't more descriptive. My resistor has been bypassed - since before I got the car. I was hoping that someone had the electrical diagram of the VATS module behind the dash on the passenger side.
