engine backfires and burbles when the gas pedal is released. There is an exhaust smell also.

I have had the exhaust checked for leaks, and checked the ignition parts as well.

Any ideas?

Does it only do it when cold and then hot? What about in between when the car is warm? I was just wandering if it was a constant problem.

Is this actually coming from the engine or the exhaust?

backfire

It is louder and more conspicuous when cold, but backfire continues when warm and when hot. It sounds like its coming from the engine. I have checked for obvious exhaust leaks and for leaks around the heads and exhaust manifolds.

The backfire condition still persists and is driving me crazy.

First thing I would check is the timing. You may need to retard it just a little while it is cold, and let the advance kick in as it warms up.

Also check your wires to make certain you aren't cross arcing, hence setting off other cylinders. Causing the back firing.

What conditions are your valve seats? Is there all sorts of carbon and buildup on the back of the valve, and causing flakes to come off and keep the valve partially open for a spark cycle, hence having no compression and the spark igniting fuel and air mixture all the way back into the intake?

Backfiring is bad with Fuel Injection. You need to get this stopped or else you're going to be looking at some big bucks.

Yes I agree your timing could be off. That is where I would start. Try setting it to factory spec if it isn't already. If it is then retard it a degree or so, and just get a feel for where it is best set.

I found 1 bold on the manifold that I could just turn a bit. This stopped most of the backfire issues when hot. It still pops when its cold.

Thanks for the sugesstions.
