I'm having some issues with the digital gauges on my 92. The speedo will stop working intermittenly (display stays on but goes to zero and odometer stops) and the fuel gauge either reads full or empty, nothing in between. Has anyone had anything like this happen? Not sure if I'm looking at a gauge cluster issue or two seperate problems.;help

Never had this problem, but check the easy stuff first. Look at your speed sensors on the wheels. If no luck then check the connection to the gauges. It way just be a little loose or dirt got in there.

Good Luck!:cool

Do the free test first... Pull the gauge cluster, find one of the ground points on the board, and solder in a temporary ground connector. EDIT: Depending on how the harness connector comes into the board, it might not be too hard after all...

If the problem goes away, your ground is faulty. If it doesn't go away, find out what the spec current is that comes INTO the board, and see if it's a common feed for fuel and mph.

Won't be easy, but it will be free.

Ain't scared of 'free' stuff, are ya'?

I have one of the problems discussed above (speedo goes to zero while driving) on an intermittant basis. I'll confess to "just living with it" for now because it happens so infrequently.

If I was to start solving it, rather than soldering stuff onto the cluster's circuit board, if the concern is grounding, I'd get the factory service manual, read the wiring diagrams then check for high resistance in the ground path from the cluster. Also, make sure the connector for the cluster is free of corrosion.

If I didn't find trouble there, I'd look for wiring or connector problems in circuits that bring the VSS signal into the cluster and in the fuel gauge circuits.

Also, in the FSM, you'll probably find troubleshooing info either of those problems.

I found a guy in Indiana that works on these; I'm going to send it to him to see what he says. I can handle no speedo/odometer or gas gauge but with both of them out there's no way to tell my fuel level. Thanks for the advice!
