Car in storage many years. When putting in gear (automatic), it slams into gear-not a smooth shift (both rev or forw). Any thoughts of what the problem is. Thanks

Is your idle set correctly?
If it is idling too high, then it can cause this problem.

Have you checked the transmission fluid? If it's low it can Slam into gear!!:upthumbs

This is somewhat normal. Define "slam". Because we have IRS, when we put our automatic transmissions in drive (or reverse for that matter), they squat, or "slam" a bit, and depending on your idle, it can be mildly violent I suppose. I would say it is probably nothing to worry about.

Check the fluid levels. The seals may also be brittle.
