I just bought a 1999 Coupe this week. The one thing I didn't like was the stock rims for that year. I want to change over to the "01-04" style and go chrome.

Questions-

Will it hurt my value to do this change? I have always believed keeping it 100% stock, but can I get away with this?

I can't find a vendor that will do an exchange with a 99 wheel against the new version?

Or should I just keep the 99 style and do a chrome wheel on that style?

Thks, Jay

How's it going, Jay?

I'm not certain but I don't think that it will hurt your resale to install Y2K-style rims on your '99. It will help you, more than likely, when selling to a consumer/enthusiast but I can't say for sure how it will affect you at a dealership (i.e. trade in).

As far as exchange, there isn't any company that I know of, either, that will exchange rims (i.e. stock for chrome) that are of different styles/model years.

I, too, prefer the Y2K style rims over the '97-'99 style. But going chrome [in your style] might not be a bad idea. If you go to the C5 Parts for sale forum on this site you might find a set of Y2K chrome rims for sale at a great price. Here's a link from that forum of someone trying to sell a set of chrome rims in your stock style for an excellent price.

Good luck,
Kenny

Swap the wheels, but keep your originals. Not having the original GM wheels with the car when you sell it in the future will hurt the sale price. NCRS restorers pay BIG BUCKS to find original parts for their restorations and early C5's will qualify for NCRS in about 10 years.

But, it's a personal decision and not everyone worries about originality or correctness in their cars. Keeping the car stock/original is high on my own priority scale, but then, I recognize that I'm being obsessive. Hell, I've even avoided getting the '97-'99 chrome wheels because they weren't offered as a factory option.

In the long run, do whatever makes you happy. But my advise would be to hang onto your original '99 wheels and get the chrome version of the'99's if you want a little bling, bling....

I agree with 97RedCorvette, keep your stock wheels. There not worth much right now anyway. I just bought a set that was real nice for 200.00!

If you don't like the looks of the stock '99 rims, the chrome ones earn't that far behind. I don't think you'd be satisfied and the price is the same.

I strongly suggest going with the new style wheels if your going to upgrade. the early 2000 wheels were different than the 2001+ wheels. The 2001+ wheels have a thicker spoke. The thinner ones cracked.

Painted or chrome is up to you. Watch out for inferior chroming on some of the aftermarket wheels.

Go for the chrome Z06 style wheels with some new wider tires. Keep the stock wheels and tires for the winter.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think I will keep my original wheels and just buy outright later model chrome. This gives me options 1) sell car with 2001 chrome and stock 99 2) put stock 99 back on when time to sell and sell my 2001 chrome used outright. I am sure a strong market exists for the 2001 wheels.

Either way, having both sets gives me much flexibility and we are not talking a ton of cash tied up.

Love the car.
