I'm trying to determine if my '68 a/c fan is working properly, and if so, are there any upgrades out there to boost performance. The first 2 speeds seem almost non-existant, while the "high" speed is barely adequate. Is this normal for this vintage?

NO, I had the same problem with a 78'. Take a look at your Amp gauge when you turn the fan on. If it is the motor,as it was in my case, you should see a drop when you turn on the fan. I replaced the fan motor and no more problem.

I'll check that gauge, but I do know the motor is working when turned on, just not sure if it's "tired" or simply a design problem. I did caulk around the blower bow which helped a little, but not enough for Central Texas. Glen

That Wilcox supplier may be just the thing. Looks like I'll be busy checking all those seals, flappers, valves, etc. but I really think it's mostly a weak fan motor. Thanks

One thing you can do is to pull off the small rubber air hose on the fan motor and squirt some WD-40 into it (the motor)--made a huge difference in mine.

1. Pull off the fan motor and snake a wet/dry vacuum cleaner hose down to the coils.
2. Take out the fan resistor bank and spray foaming bathroom cleaner down the hole.
3. Turn the vacuum cleaner on and keep spraying the whole can while twisting the hose about.

It's not a perfect way to clean the coils, but it works pretty well.

I eventually replaced the fan/motor with one from a '94 Corvette--I got so much air now my wife complains about her hair blowing.
