I removed the horn assembly and steering wheel to repaint and clean. I was trying to be very careful and remember just how everything came apart so that I could get it back together the same way. Well, when I pulled one ring out I noticed that it had an "L" shaped part that protruded down into the column. It went somewhere down the shaft where the spring loaded button is that activates the horn. I just don't know where this part fits back in. I checked my assembly manual but it didn't show this feature. Any help?:confused

Thanks,

Andy

I just rebuilt my horn in my 77.

The "L" part just goes into the steering column close to the contact for the horn. It actually touches the "L" bracket. That piece becomes live (wired). When you depress the center steering wheel cap, the piece that goes on top deflects, and makes contact, and you get sound.

The part w/ the "L" goes in first, (position it so it touches the contact), then the spacer rings, then the piece with the plastic spacer. Screw all that down, then put the steering wheel center cap on and press. If you have sound, then you did it right. If not, well, grab a screwdriver and start touching parts till you get a sound.

All those internal metal parts should be plain metal so they will conduct. I hope you didn't paint those!

do a search of previous posts from back in 2003 or 2002. I put up pictures of the steering column/horn pieces laid out in the order they go back together. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll see if I can dig up the pics on my computer.

I also have an interest in this answer. I have no sound and after taking part of the horn button apart think that I have missing parts. Would love to see your pictures. I did a search but It looks like pictures didn't make the transistion to the new database format. If you can find them and repost I would be thankful.

I'll see if I can dig them up this weekend...

1980 Steering Wheel Attachment (Part 1 of 2)

OK...here's the way it is for my '80.

Start by attaching your steering wheel.
attachment.php

Place this ring on the column, keeping the thread posts in the approximate position shown
attachment.php

Put on the column's telescoping lockring.
Note: Be sure that the lockring is at the 10-11 o'clock position (telescope unlocked)
attachment.php

Screw in the lockring bolt. But don't torque it down. Just get it to the point where it's tight and where you have two screw holes lined up with the guides of the bolt. (I know I'm not using the correct terminology. That's why you have pictures to supply the thousand words that I can't ;))

You can check the assembley thus far by twisting the column telescoping lockring to the right. It should be pretty tight by the 1 o'clock position. What this does is finish torquing down the lockring bolt. That's why you didn't completely tighten it before hand!

1980 Steering Wheel Attachment (Part 2 of 2)

Grab your shims that you previously removed...

...And grab the horn contact assembley.
Notice the horn contact post between my fingers
attachment.php

Secure the shims under the horn contact assembley.
Note: Make sure that the horn contact post is lined up with the contact post coming out of the column at the 10-11 o'clock position.
Line up the thread ringpost with the thread holes in the steering wheel base.
The screws should go through the ringposts and into the threads at the base of the steering wheel. Finish by evenly tightening down all three screws.

At this point you can check the column's telescope locking ability by loosening and tightening the ring. When unlocked, the column should slide relatively easy. And then obviously, when in the locked position...

You can also visually inspect your horn contact to be sure that everything is going to line up and make contact as expected.

Putting the horn cap back on:
Center the cap/emblem relative to your steering wheel and place it over the clip/horn contact assembley. Apply even pressure to the cap to snap it on. (I think I just used the palm of my hand . I may have had to give it a lil' love tap, but I don't fully recall.)

Thanks. That got it for me. Not sure what the previous owner did but I had missing parts. Had to visualise what you need when there was nothing under the horn button.
