AC/Belt squeak

I am currently having some squeeking coming from the engine compartment when the AC is on. It does not do this when I first leave in the morning, only after the car warms up. If I turn the AC off the noise goes away.

I thought maybe it was the compressor going bad, but if that was the case wouldn't it make that noise all the time?

I am thinking that it is the belt or the tension pulley, rather than the compressor and I am going to change the belt this weekend and see if that fixes the problem.

Anyone run into this before and if so what was the problem, the compressor or the belt/pulley?

Thanks!

Mick

I think many of us had this squeeky belt problem at some point. Sometimes it just never seems to go away no matter what you do. Try some WD40 on the belt or belt dressing and see if that helps. (be careful not to get too close to the fan). So far it works for me.

Thanks, I did plugs/wires and repaired a vacuum leak this weekend. I am going to replace all the tensioner/idler pulleys and both belts next weekend.

I had a Buick that the belt started squeeking on , and did what you are talking about for a month or so until the tensioner pulley finally just died. I believe the squeak was a result of said pulley starting to fail and not spinning fast enough. So the belt was traveling across the pulley faster than it was spinning, causing the noise.

Thanks for the reply I do appreciate it!

hey there,
i was told by someone who knows,he said never put belt dressing on a surpenteen belt,it causes rapid deterioration.mine just startred to make noise also, mines the main belt(36.000).i will be doing what mick s3 is doing, replace both belts, tensioners and pulleys.i might try the aftermarket billet black anodized tensioner, they look killer.you could try the bar of soap trick.it only works for a dat thou.later,Todd.

There are several Technical Service Bulletins out that may be applicable. Your corvette service technician may be able to help you more than I can. These are 3 that may be useful:

#990604029A DEC 00 Engine - Accessory Drive Rumble

#99-06-01-007 MAY 99 Engine - Accessory Drive Squeak

#99-06-03-011 OCT 99 Warranty - Generator Replacement
