Want to clean up engine bay, AC never worked so took compessor out and brackets. How can I remove some or all of the box on the firewall. Would like ti remove this and fabricate some sort of shield. Gonna put electronic ignition in soon and this would be ideal spot to mount my box. Anyone do this?

Sorry that I can't answer your questions. Just wondering whether or not you're getting rid of those brackets. I have a short compressor. Maybe I can ge those brackets to work on my big block..

I'm not 100% sure but think that in addition to holding the evaporator, or is that the condensor, that big box on the firewall has the air coming through it for the vents and heater.

Do you not have brackets? Someday I may put it all back in with the updated AC unit, wife already complaining about being cooked from headers and side exhaust. AM sure 20th street auto has the BB brackets, They found me a 77 electronic tach.

was looking for places to mount my MSD box besides the fender wheel and maybe clean up that engine bay in prep for new engine.

The bracket that I had before was for my 350. I have since changed over to a BB. I don't have the stock compressor either so it's alittle difficult. I think I can use the brackets from a mid 80's truck. Have to do alittle more research.

Don't do it!

You will regret it!

It is easier in the long run to go ahead and fix your system. To clean it up, you can get creative and repaint the dog box on the firewall to look fresh. Install an aftermarket small compressor and maybe even a aftermarket serpentine drive system.

Now a days, the true essense of a cool hot rod is one that can be balanced with both go fast goodies, and cool creature comforts (your wife will thank you later).

Funny you should say that Chris because that's exactly what has been on my mind lately--remove my air conditioner. I never use it anyway; we don't need it here like you guys over there. :cool

Well some of us in CA that live by the BEACH!

But us high desert people LIKE our A/C and run it everyday!

I agree with Chris... DON'T DO IT...FIX IT!

upgrade ac

OK, im thinking.... Who were the folks that had the upgrades for AC?
Still thinking....
I think it's a Hp robber, so I ripped it out. I'm a desert dweller but have that biker mantality of the wind and open air. wife is the freon baby, it's to hot!!! lol....... Went on a 100 mile cruize the other night, when it got late and a little chilly told her this was her A/C. Then I heard "roll up the windows it's cold and my hair is blowing" Told her, that "she's in a vette and you can't look bad in a vette even with Madusa hair and that if I rolled up the windows it would muffle the sound of the side exhaust!

P.S. no A/C= less times wife wants to take car. My prenup=Wife gets house and kids, I get vette.

These are the days of our lives!

In that case then, you need to get a heater box from a non a/c car and swap it all out. YOu will have to fill a little on the firewall as the a/c cars have a larger hole.

That way you will still have heat and defrost which at a minimum is required by most states with inspections. Plus, it is nice to defrost off the windshield.

I am sure somebody with a non a/c car would gladly trade you the heater box parts for the a/c parts.

I thought similiar in my younger days. My AC compressor started 'locking up' on me. So, I removed it. Then I removed the condensor. (Or whatever is in front of the radiator.) ANything I could remove, I THREW AWAY.

I wish I could go back right now, and simply purchase another compressor and stick it back on. I regret it.
