I've been told that my accelerator pump isn't working correctly. I have a hesitation on take off, I idle at 1100 rpm., and on starting the choke has a hard time keeping the idle going. When it does catch it will idle at 2200/2300 rpm. My question is can I properly set the timing, dwell, and points by the specs or is it a by the seat of the pants thing? Or should I just have the carb re-built before doing anything else?

Sounds like you have other carburetor problems in addition to the accelerator pump. I'd start by having a good carburetor man set it up properly before I started with ignition (points, timing, etc.).

Idling at 1100 RPM seems a little high. Even the 365hp could be idled down to 850 RPM. Sounds like you may have a vacuum leak somewhere.

Sounds like all the "basic" adjustments are way off and need attention; a good tune-up with attention to the details of the carb adjustments (including the idle mixture, accelerator pump, choke, and fast idle) should improve it.

I'll take the reverse opinion. Set the timing and dwell to factory specs. Pull off the rotor and make sure that the mechanical advance mechanism is clean and operates freely. Make sure the vacuum advance is operating, and that you plug the carb port when setting the timing.

A carter carb idle can be initialized by turning each idle jet screw in all the way - then backing out 1.5 turns. At idle, the main jets should not be operating, and that means you should not twist the idle (linkage stop) screw in so far that the air control plates on the throttle shaft are cocked open, allowing air to suck fuel through the venturis and/or supply more air than the idle jets can mix fuel with at a 14 to 1 ratio.

As stated above - unless you have a heck of cam, it should idle in the 700-850 range.

All of the above assumes a fairly stock setup. Tell us what you have.

Guys, it's a stock 327/300. If i'ts not to cold in the garage today i'm going to do some screw turning.

Got into the garage today. Cleaned points, cap, reset timing, dwell, idle mix, choke. Can't set fast idle for some reason. She does run and start a lot better and the idle is now @ 850RPM whic is still high. Guess I'll look into a rebuild kit. Many thanks for all the help.

What is the vacuum reading?
