I'm purchasing a set of spears for the 98 but they are used.

I'd rather put new adhesive on instead of just reheating the old adhesive. Does anyone know what type of adhesive is used? And where I can get it?

Thanks!

usually most of those types of things are applied with a backing of 3M tape. it is made in a variety of thicknesses to meet every application. the better stuff is available from your local paint and body supply store. places like NAPA and pep boys have the more general purpose type stuff.

the old adhesive is best removed using either a heat gun (be careful not to overheat the parts as they might "blue" or discolor), or a generous application of "goo gone" or a similar citrus type glue remover. if you are at the paint and body supply shop, get some of the 3M adhesive remover they carry, it works quite well.

hope that helps some.

Thanks Steve!

I saw the cheap stuff at PepBoys and it just didn't seem to have the holding power. I'll try the body shop.

I just did that project on my '98 vert. I agree..get the 3M foam tape, part # 06384 at any autobody/paint supply store. The tough part is the removal, trust me, I wasted a lot of time w/ the chems and removers. The best way to do this I discovered is to buy a wire brush wheel (got mine at Orchard Supply for about $6) get the course one. Put that on a drill, sit in the backyard w/ drill and mouldings in your lap and strip away. Much easier than any other method. Had all 4 pieces stripped in about 15 min. Applied new tape and placed on car that night. They look great. Good luck, Mike.

Thanks for the adhesive info.

I test fitted them with some household two-sided tape and it looks pretty cool.

By the way, the spears are black and my car is pewter. I'm also painting the halo bar/back pillar black - going for a different look, obviously. I'm not attaching the spears until I get the halo painted.
