Adventures in Kentucky: National Corvette Museum

Since opening in 1994, the Corvette Museum has been one of Bowling Green's most popular attractions.
In this week's Adventures in Kentucky, Matt travels to the museum to learn more about America's sports car.

Almost all of us at some point have pictured ourselves driving one of these.
Since the first model hit showrooms in 1953, this car has been somewhat of an American symbol.
Since opening in 1994, the National Corvette Museum here in Bowling Green has provided an educational tribute to America's sports car.
"We've got over 70 Corvettes on the floor more than they have ever seen in the past," said Marketing Manager, Bobbie Lee.
"They're going to see exhibits here they they cannot see anywhere else."
And one of those exhibits includes a car that is one of it's kind, literally.
"Matt, this is the only 1983 Corvette in existence," explained Lee.
"There were about 43 of these produced, by the time they worked out all of the defects it was already 1984. All of them were destroyed but one, and we have it."
Moving on, I took a little time to have some fun.
The Corvette Museum gives visitors the opportunity to put their skills to the test in their Pit Crew Challenge.
This virtual simulator allowed me to get the feel for changing fuel in cars and changing tires, all while racing against the clock, just as if I were really in the middle of a race.
Speaking of racing, Corvettes are no stranger to the track.
"Of course you see we've got all different types of pace cars," stated Lee.
"This is on loan from General Motors. It's the original car that paced the 2004 Daytona 500 in Feb. 2004. Of course, Dale Earnhardt Jr. won that event, so it's very popular for people to come and take pictures."
It's exhibits like these that bring tourists in from all over the Country to learn more about the Corvette.
"They are beautiful, they are fast, and not very many people get to own one," exclaimed one visitor.
"We saw the signs and who doesn't love a Corvette? We thought we would see what it's all about."
With over 48,000 square feet of Corvettes, the Corvette Museum will always remain one of Bowling Green's most unique attractions.
"It started with the first 1953 Corvette that a member donated," said Lee.
February offers "Dollar Days" at the Corvette Museum.
If you are a Kentucky resident and would like to visit, admission is only $1.
