Hi guys, after putting up with the standard bose radio working when it wants to, ive been and got a sony cd system to fit, but im confused about how to fit it.

Firstly, this stereo is slimmer than the bose, so i need somekind of kit to make it fit, anyone know where i can get them from? Im in the UK, and dont have much look finding things like that, also as far as wiring is concerned, can i just join up the wires and off i go? Ive read several other threads about replacing the amps and things if you change the stereo, is that correct? All im after is splicing a few wires, joining them up and iff i go, thats all id do on a uk car, but not sure about the vette.

Cheers

Mike

You need a faceplate for your radio and car...do a google for corvette radio faceplates

Wiring should be stright forward...just find the pos and neg wires and hook them up acording to the diagram that came with the new radio also the wires for the speakers can be reused. You shouldn't need door amps anymore...just mount the speaker where the old ones were.

Here are a few diagrams from my 84 that should be the same for your car...follow the colors of the wires.

Hi, thanks for the info, i wasnt going to replace the speakers, is this going to be a problem?

Mine doesn't sound like crap, it sounds better then the factory setup. All you need to do is get a wiring harness, tell them you have a 1985 Corvette they should have one, then just take that and plug it into the cd player, then connect the right wires then take the red, or pink amp wire that has a little clip on it for the factory bose, and clip it off, if it is the same as my 87 then that wire is by itself, its not with any others in a wiring harness. Then just solder it or however you are doing it to the amp wire to the cd player and it will work. Unless you want to spend all that money for the adapters and what not. I didn't and it has worked for over a year now.

I installed a sony in mine two months ago. I had the adapter already there from a previous aftermarket unit. Check out any reputable car audio store for the faceplate.

It sounds like Justin bypassed the speaker amps from the dash rather then the enclosures themselves. Not a bad trick if you ask me Justin. :upthumbs

Wiring is simple. Just follow the instructions that come with the sony. But if you don't install an adapter or do what Justin did, the unit won't work well if at all.

No I didn't bypass the amps, there should be like a blue wire I think coming off of the head unit that says amp or something on it, and I just attached the two together. Yes there is static if you listen to iit on low volume, but who does then when they are driving a vette? You face a serious risk of blowing out the amps and speakers because you are over powering them, but when that happens I will just put all new stuff in. My brother has had it the same way as mine and it has been working fine for about 4 years now, with two different CD players.
