On the Callaway Aero Body, what did the rear vent (behind the rear wheels) do?

The rear vents (on most) , gave a great appearence to the cars lines - they are not functional as a matte black plate sits inside, holding the side marker lights in place

Some owners have added screening to the gill area's to brighten them up
-in this pic, you can see the matte plate behind the stainless mesh...
