Long painful couple of months. My stock shifter cable on my 81 auto snapped. Replaced with a napa unit, 2 weeks later, the shaft at the top crumples, replace with anouther napa unit, and 4 weeks later (today) it crumples as well. I'm gonna call zip tommorrow and ask about the cable they sell, and if its a cheap import or a good product.

But, since i'm at it, is there an after market shifter that will bolt to the stock location without having to cut or drill anything?

I've never heard of ANY after-market shifter that will fit 'as-is' in a C3;
I'm modifying an '80 Vette for strip-only, and will 'make' one fit.....

i figured as much. Maybe i'll get lucky and someone else will have. lol

right now i'm trying to figure out a way to run two cables, one to pull it into gear, and a second to pull it into park.

kinda of like the dual cables on a motor cycle throttle. one on, one off. I think it'll work, i just need to find a way to make the 180 degree turn for the "park" cable to work. I tried once tonight, but it didn't work, but after thinking a bit, i've got an idea that i think will work that i'll probally try tommorrow.

are you sure your ground cable is good?Ive seen cars with bad ground cables go bad then the shifter cable acts as the ground and have the same problem your having.

rule number 1 when replacing a shifter cable. TAKE YOUR TIME!

Took an hour and half to install it, but its shifting like silk now. This time i wrapped the small cyclanders to the main shaft with electric tape (Hi, I'm bubba, have we met) and marked the sides of the cable and ends that i wanted facing up and towards teh the drivers side and used zip ties to secure the cable in place so that it doesn't move and bind up again.

the shifts are smoother then a baby's butt.
