after test drive - two issues to deal with

Barry,

Did you put new donuts in when you put your exhaust system back together?

yep, i sure did
new donuts, replaced the heat valve with the fuelie spacer ring and a new gasket on the spacer ring, new studs and nuts, pretty much new everything.

The first thing I'd try to do to solve that problem would be to try to snug those nuts up again. Good luck.

Barry,
That distributor has been a problem for quite some time. Why not try another one as a comparison before you spend money? I have a unit that has been rebuilt using a Lars kit with new parts, including the bushing mentioned earlier, correct shimming for shaft endplay, Echlin points/condensor, etc. It is basement inventory and has not been used since the rebuild. I can ship it off to you at my cost for you to give it a whirl. No obligation on your part.

E-mail me as to your address if this suits your needs.

Barry,
After starting mine up for the 1st time,It idled descent. Then noticed major fuel leak from all 3 lines.Cranked the heck out of them now leaks are gone.
yesterday when I worked on it again, the car ran horrabely.
-would'nt idle
-ran like it was'nt getting any fuel
-backfiring thru the carb
-missfired even at 2500rpm
Called Craig and he said I may be getting fuel into my front or rear carbs causing it to actually flood and foul the plugs.Possibly dirt in line which I would have to clear. That or a vacuum leak.?????I wish I new more about carburators.
He also told me that I need to set time to 12*initial rather than 4*and try to find some racing fuel.He said the pump gas were buying now is crap and doesnt see it getting better.

Jim

yep, i'm not having fun getting my system set up either :(
once warmed up it's idling fine which is a nice change because idle was always a problem for me on this car but the timing and other issues are driving me nuts.
and as i'm working on it i've gotten a number of very lovely backfires myself - one happened not 15 minutes ago. :eek

I suppose a vacuum leak is a possibility as at least some of the issues we are both having but I don't know enough to say ot determine on my own so far.

Yes, i agree that today's gas is nothing like the gas available when these cars are new but I think if you set your inital that much higher than the specs in your book you will have to get your distributor recurved otherwise by setting your inital timing that high your total timing is going to be way too high also. The weights and springs in your distributor are set up to give you a certain amount of advance over the intial advance so if you increase the intial you will also increase the total and if it's too high you risk causing detonation which can destroy your pistons. Not a fun thing to happen.

I think in one of your threads JohnZ replied and said to stick with your book spec initial timing setting and i'd follow John's advice, he is the true expert on these cars!

Barry,
Have you ever been in a situation were you really didnt know what to do? I do agree with you though about John Z.I've read many of his threads and always have respected his knowledge.4* it is.Now if I can just figure out why my car isnt running well.(much worse than last year)
Going to check Craigs idea to look for fuel flowing into secondary carbs, and flooding engine,I dont feel comfortable pulling the jets from carbs to check for blockage but I guess I have nothing to loose.I'll just send them back..
maybe I'll talk to herb(firstgear)during lift off party..
WHY CANT IT BE EASY FOR ONCE>> Jim

EVERY single time I'm under the hood of my car!! ;LOL ;LOL ;LOL

HAHA, I guess thats one reason I enjoy this hobby. If your not really sure how to do it,just dive in head first and eventually it'll work out(with help from CAC members)

Believe me, that's EXACTLY what I did! I dived in without a single clue about what I was doing.
I may be having some issues on the car now, but the way I look at it, considering how much work I did and as many parts as i pulled off the motor with NO expereince at all previously, and I got them all put back together and the car started and ran again on the first try (even with these minor issues to work out) i consider it a sucess. :)

Quite an accomplishment..I wonder what your next projects might be.

I've always wondered how long its been since my engines been rebuilt(if ever)

Maybe next winter.

not sure yet........ I'm afraid to think about them ;LOL

actually, the next major project I want to do when I can afford it is to add an A/C system to the car.

Aint that the truth. How could I forget that.My wife hates driving w/me if its hotter than 70*.Its like being in an oven.
I baught my car from Proteam in Napoleon and 67 BB w/air where going for another 30k.

Barry,

You are very close. Do you have any idea how much time is spent by a professional mechanic after installing an engine? I can tell you by personal experience that the install was sometimes shorter than the final tuning!

I am not kidding about this. You can be a stickler for details (like me) and you will always have issues. You have accomplished a tremendous amount of work. You are now on the down side of the hill (mountain) :L so everything will come into place really fast. Especially with the great advice you are receiving on this forum.

I would put that rebuilt distributor in and look at the results.

Exhaust leaks can be tricky. On a Vette as old as yours, exhaust systems were always difficult to seal. Good advice in previous posts.
