I've already stated in other messages that I do not intend to keep my 62 "pure". She was not pure when I got her, and I want to play, not show. She will look original to those who are not into the "details"!

Does anyone have any experience with some of those "bolt in" aftermarket radios? Seems there is an outfit here in So. Cal. that markets am/fm/cassette units that fit right into the old spot with no "hacking". They even claim to have "stereo" speakers that fit where the old mono unit is in the dash.

Any advice out there?

Oh. My car did not come with any radio so, no, I do not have the original available for sale!:(

I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Hal,

I just completed installation of the SS SecretAudio Stereo from Custom Auto Sound. With it I installed the CD Changer. I installed it in my 64 by building a mounting out of plywood that was a custom fit in the rear compartment. There were no holes drilled and the entire unit including speakers mounted onto it, which I covered in matching black carpet. It comes with an IR remote so I can do all the functions with the remote even standing several feet away from the car. With this installation I was able to keep the original radio (not working) in the dash. Also, the car came with the dual cone speaker sold by Custom Auto Sound in the original speaker location that sounds great along with the two 6X9's I installed in the rear. Below is their website.

Tad, thanks for the information. That's an interesting approach! This is the same supplier thaqt I was looking at - I had not seen the "hidden" units.

I don't have any radio at the moment, so would actually "display" the aftermarket unit. But I think I'm "hearing" :s you say the quality is good.

Thanks.

Hal

I got a custom autosound from my wife as a christmas present years ago. I did have to send it back and get one that worked. The second one performs well but there is no handy search function (only goes one way and doesn't continue unless you press again). The autosound unit also uses a floating ground that requires a Scoche adapter to hook up a booster. My 6 speakers are in the headrests and behind the seats.

Dave, thanks for the comment. Sounds like this is the preferred vendor at least. Given they are local to me (So. Cal) I may just drop in and check out all the models and get a better understanding of what it will take to install.

Thanks again.
