Hey guys,

I have an '04 Z06 and I thought the air box lid was supposed to have an additional slit down the center for more air flow. Mine only has the slit across the thing, not down the center. Did I get jipped and get a regular corvette airbox, or do all the Z06's have these?

Thanks,

The standard LS1 air box lid has a vertical opening in the middle of the lid that is just "barely" wider than a US quarter. The LS6 lid has a single opening in the middle that is several times wider than a that. Does this describe what you are seeing?

My lid has a horizontal opening only, no vertical one. I thought the LS-6 airbox is supposed to have an opening that looks like a "T" (a horizontal opening, with a vertical one that goes down from the center of the horizontal one)

Maybe 'vertical' isn't exactly the right description. The actual opening is 'horizontal' on the LS6 box but there is a depressed part below the opening that runs 'vertically'. This is to allow water to run off the box instead of into it. If you notice, the hood gap is right over the air box, so this can be an issue.

On the LS1 air box, the opening is very small and the 'vertical' depression in the lid is much longer. On the LS6 air box lid, the opening is probably 4 times wider with the depress part of the lid the same length top to bottom.

I was looking under the hood of an 04 Z06 recently and I didn't notice any difference in the 04 air box from the one I bought for my 03 AE back in 03.

There used to be pictures posted in previous threads here and on the 50th registry forum (www.50thregistry.com) but I can't find them right now. If I can, I'll provide the link or I'll have to shot new pictures.

The '01 Z06 had a different airbox lid - with a more square inlet opening.

The 02 and later examples all sport a elongated rectangular inlet design like you describe.

You've got the Z06 airbox - what you describe is exactly what I bought from Fichtner as a Z06 lid, and installed in my '02 Coupe.

The stock C5 lid opening is approximately 1.5 square inches. The opening in the Z06 lid is approximately 12 square inches, equal to the opening area of the MAF. Since the MAFs are identical, except for the screen, the C5 breathes through a straw with the stock lid.

What Warren S refers to is the famous "Zip Tie Mod". I'd like to know if this works, or the computer just factors the extra air out, or throws lean codes. I have a hunch if there were free horsepower out there that the Corvette engineers would grab it. But, then, as an engineer myself, I may be giving them too much credit. I doubt it, though, and that's why I have adopted several Z06 mods to my LS1, and will weigh the benefits of LS2 and LS6 applications to my car as they become available (tb, intake manifold, etc.).

The zip tie mod gave me the feeling of slightly better response above 3500. As its almost a free mod anyone can do their own reasearch.

As for the corvette engineers passing up free horsepower, and likely hood of the basic owner finding it, its indeed possible as we are not motivated by noise reduction (closed air box lid) and emsissions standards.

Excellent points - an open intake can definitely hoot, and Big Brother must always be taken into account. :mad

Did you notice any loss of power anywhere in the power band (e.g., hole shot?)

No loss of power, seat of the pants feels like the car is running smoother over 3500 RPM. I only had the car 2 weeks before doing this.
